Happy birthday OS X !

Actually, i just bought my mac book pro (MBP) a year ago, exactly at the end of July 2009. But the OS that is used in the MBP was 9 years old.

On September 13, 2000 Apple released a public beta called “Kodiak” (think of this as OS X’s conception). On March 24, 2001 Apple effectively ditched OS 9 for the current generation OS that would allow ultimate scalability for the coming decades. Since then, Mac OS X has had seven or eight major versions depending on who you ask. Jobs considered Mac OS X 10.4.4 major version since it was totally rewritten to run on Intel chips. Here’s a list of the names and subsequent release dates for all the versions thus far.

10.0 Cheetah — March 24, 2001
10.1 Puma — September 25, 2001
10.2 Jaguar — August 24, 2002
10.3 Panther — October 24, 2003
10.4 Tiger — April 29, 2005
10.4 Intel Tiger — January 10, 2006
10.5 Leopard — October 26, 2007
10.6 Snow Leopard — August 28, 2009

Upgrade Fink on Mac OS X 10.6

Fink is ready to be used on Snow Leopard (OS X v. 10.6). Users will need to choose between a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of fink for 10.6. It will not be possible to “upgrade” from 32-bit to 64-but (or vice versa), without completely reinstall fink.

If you are a Mac user who have to upgrade to the snow leopard, then you have to upgrade Fink. To upgrade your Fink installation from 10.5/32 bit to 10.6/32 bit (there is no direct upgrade path from earlier OS versions), follow the
sequence below:

Use
```
sudo fink -V
```
to check your package manager version, which needs to be at least 0.29.9 before upgrading.

To upgrade package manager, if your package manager version older than 0.29.9, you need to edit the file

/sw/lib/perl5/Fink/Services.pm

on line number 1448.

Before:

my %darwin_osx = ('1' => '10.0', '5' => '10.1', '6' => '10.2', '7' => '10.3', '8' => '10.4', '9' => '10.5');

After:

my %darwin_osx = ('1' => '10.0', '5' => '10.1', '6' => '10.2', '7' => '10.3', '8' => '10.4', '9' => '10.5', '10' => '10.6');

Edit the file
```
/sw/etc/fink.conf
```
, adding a line to it which reads
```
NoAutoIndex: true.
```
run command
```
fink index -f
```
run command
```
fink reinstall fink
```
in order to tell fink that you are now on 10.6.
run command
```
fink update fink
```
to get the latest fink for 10.6.
run command
```
fink install perl588-core
```
to replace the version of perl which Apple changed during the OS X upgrade, in case you have fink packages which depend on it.
After the upgrade, you may wish to run
```
fink configure
```
to do some cleanup.

Almost all of the packages in fink’s stable tree will compile on 10.6, but be warned that only a fraction of the 10.5 packages are currently available for 10.6. In the near future, fink’s package database will be updated to include information about packages for 10.6.

Install Mysql/Ruby pada Leopard

Anda pengguna Mac? Tentu Anda sudah mengetahuinya, bahwa Mac dengan Leopard sebagai OS-nya telah menyediakan Apache dan PHP. Bila Anda tidak puas dengan Apache dan PHP bawaan Leopard, Anda, mempunyai banyak alternatif pilihannya. Ada Bitnami, XAMPP, MAMP, dsb.

Bagaimana dengan Ruby? Tenang, Leopard juga telah menyediakannya, untuk Anda!

Ok, asumsi Anda memilih menginstall XAMPP sebagai default AMP (Apache, Mysql, PHP) pada box Leopard Anda. Setelah Anda XAMPP telah berjalan dengan baik, maka buka terminal dan jalankan perintah berikut untuk menginstall MySQL/Ruby

sudo gem install mysql -- \
  --with-mysql-dir=/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles \

  --with-mysql-lib=/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/lib \
  --with-mysql-include=/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/include

85% pemilik Mac juga punya PC

Menurut survey yang dilakukan di USA, bahwa pengguna Mac di seluruh USA ada 12%. 85% dari pengguna Mac itu juga memilik PC, tetapi tidak sebaliknya.

Hmm, hasil survey itu sesuai dengan kondisi saya. Saya mempunyai Mac dan Saya juga mempunyai PC. Bagaimana dengan Anda?

Purging Memory

Ude lama nggak nulis, setelah laptop compaq jebol dan 2 bulan ini masih nyoba-nyoba MBP baru. Ternyata saat make MBP, ada keperluan juga untuk purge memory setelah beberapa aplikasi sudah tidak digunakan alias di close. Caranya simple, yaitu:

1. Buka terminal dari Application -> Utilites -> Terminal

2. Ketik berikut:

     $> purge

Beres deh!
